Getting Started

What is Speed Reader?

Speed Reader is a free iOS app designed to help you consume text faster using various speed reading techniques like RSVP, Bionic Reading, and Spritz. It allows you to import articles, ebooks, and documents to read at high velocity.

Is it really free?

Yes! Speed Reader is completely free to download and use. There are no subscriptions, in-app purchases, or hidden paywalls. All reading modes and features are included.

Which devices are supported?

Speed Reader requires iOS 17.0 or later. Some features, like text summarization, require devices compatible with Apple Intelligence.

Reading Modes

What is RSVP?

RSVP (Rapid Serial Visual Presentation) displays words one at a time in the center of the screen at a set speed. This eliminates the need for eye movement, allowing for much faster reading speeds.

What is Spritz mode?

Spritz is a variant of RSVP that aligns words by their "Optimal Recognition Point" (ORP). By keeping your eye fixed on a specific letter position, it reduces eye fatigue even further.

What is Bionic Reading?

Bionic Reading boldens the first few letters of each word in a standard scrollable text view. This helps guide your eyes through the text more efficiently while maintaining a natural reading feel.

What are Chunking and Spotlight?

Chunking highlights small groups of words (3-5) sequentially, while Spotlight provides a masked focus area that moves through the text. Both modes help you maintain context while increasing your pace.

Importing Content

How do I add text to the app?

You can add text in several ways: • Paste text directly from your clipboard. • Paste a web link to extract an article. • Import EPUB ebooks from the Files app. • Scan a physical document or photo using the built-in OCR (Optical Character Recognition).

How do I use the Safari Share Extension?

1. While in Safari (ideally in Reader Mode), tap the Share icon. 2. Find and tap "Speed Reader" in the list of apps. 3. The article will be extracted and saved to your Speed Reader library instantly.

Statistics & Progress

How is "Time Saved" calculated?

We compare your current speed reading WPM (Words Per Minute) against a baseline reading speed (default is 200 WPM). The difference in time required to read the text is tracked as time saved.

What is the Baseline Test?

The Baseline Test measures your natural, comfortable reading speed without any assistive modes. This provides a realistic starting point to measure your improvement and accurately calculate time saved.

Privacy

Is my reading data private?

Absolutely. All your imported texts, library content, and reading statistics are stored locally on your device. We do not transmit or store your reading history on any servers.

How does the summarization feature work?

Text summarization is performed on-device using Apple Intelligence. This ensures that your text is never sent to a cloud server for processing, maintaining total privacy.

Troubleshooting

Why did the article extraction fail?

Article extraction works best on text-heavy pages and news articles. If a page has a complex layout or requires a login, the extractor may struggle. Try using Safari Reader Mode and sharing from there for better results.

The OCR isn't recognizing text correctly.

For best results with document scanning, ensure good lighting and keep the camera steady. OCR works best on printed text; handwritten text may have lower accuracy.
